What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorisation system designed to enhance security in the Schengen Zone by pre-screening travellers before they arrive. It’s similar to the ESTA for the USA or the ETA for the UK or Canada—just Europe’s version of it.
While it’s not operational yet (and it has been delayed a few times), once it does launch, it will be required for travellers from 59 visa-exempt countries. If you’re coming from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, or many other nations, you’ll need to apply before your trip.
Who Needs an ETIAS Authorisation?
If you’re from a country that currently enjoys visa-free travel to the Schengen Area, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS before boarding your flight, train, or ferry. This includes:
- The United Kingdom
- The United States
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- And 54 other countries

Which Countries Require ETIAS?
ETIAS applies to most of Europe—specifically, the Schengen Zone countries. That includes:
- France
- Spain
- Italy
- Germany
- Netherlands
- Belgium
- Portugal
- And many more!
It does not apply to Ireland, as it is not part of the Schengen Zone.
Since France is included, this means you’ll need an ETIAS to visit Disneyland Paris! Whether you’re dreaming of riding Big Thunder Mountain, feasting at PYM Kitchen, or meeting Mickey in his Parisian home, you’ll need to add this quick step to your travel plans.
How Do You Apply for ETIAS?
Once ETIAS launches, the application process should be straightforward:
- Apply Online – Fill out the application form via the official ETIAS website.
- Pay the Fee – The European Commission confirmed the fee at €20 per person back in July 2025 (up from an original proposal of €7).
One important note: if you’re travelling as a family: children under 18 and adults over 70 don’t pay the fee at all — they still need to apply, but it’s free. Given most of you reading this are planning family trips, that’s likely to mean most of your party goes through for free, with the fee only applying to the adults in the 18–70 bracket. - Receive Approval – In most cases, approvals will be granted within minutes. However, some applications may take up to 30 days if additional checks are required.
Where things stand right now
ETIAS was, for a long time, officially on track for the last quarter of 2026. As of the past few weeks, that target has actually been quietly removed from the official ETIAS website, and current reporting points to 2027 as more likely — the launch has always been tied to EES bedding in properly first, and EES itself has had a bumpier rollout than planned.
A firmer date is expected once the EU reviews things again in September 2026. The one thing that hasn’t changed: there’s nothing for you to do yet. No application is open, no fee is payable, and anyone claiming otherwise is not the official site.
How Will You Know When You Need an ETIAS?
The exact start date keeps moving, so rather than commit to a specific window here, the safest thing I can tell you is: nothing changes for you until the EU formally announces a date, and they’ve committed to giving several months’ notice before it goes live.

How Long Is ETIAS Valid For?
An approved ETIAS authorisation is expected to be valid for three years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. This means you won’t need to apply before every single trip (as long as your passport remains valid).
What If You Forget to Apply?
Unfortunately, you won’t be allowed to board your flight, train, or ferry to Europe if you don’t have an approved ETIAS when required. So, set yourself a reminder to apply in advance to avoid any last-minute stress!
