Disneyland Paris Blog: 7 Mistakes I Made and How You Can Avoid Them
Last year was one for the Disneyland Paris history books (or at least my personal scrapbook!). With my annual pass in hand, I had more magical days than I can count – screaming my lungs out on coasters, collecting all the character hugs, and indulging in more Mickey-shaped snacks than I care to admit. I even shed some happy tears during the fireworks. But, as magical as it was, not every moment was perfect.
Like everyone, I made my fair share of mistakes. Some were just little hiccups, but others? Let’s just say they had the potential to derail the whole day. After taking a good, hard look at it all, I realised there were at least 7 major lessons I learned the hard way that could have saved me a ton of stress. So, in the spirit of sparing you the same fate, I’m sharing them here in my Disneyland Paris blog – my biggest blunders and how you can avoid them. Trust me, knowing these tips will make your trip way more magical (and much less stressful)!

Hard Lesson #1: Don’t Set Unrealistic Expectations (Or It Will End in Tears)
This one hit me hard, and I know I’m not the only one who’s fallen into the trap of wanting to do everything in a single trip. When you’re planning your epic Disneyland Paris adventure, it’s tempting to create a schedule that covers all the rides, the shows, the character meets – basically, you want to do it all, right?
But here’s the cold, hard truth: it’s impossible to do everything in one go. Disneyland Paris is designed to keep you coming back for more. Even if you’re up at the crack of dawn, walking at lightning speed from attraction to attraction, skipping lunch, and ignoring restroom breaks, you’ll still miss something. There’s simply too much magic for one trip.
So, instead of setting yourself up for disappointment, pick 2 or 3 must-dos for each day. For me, it’s all about making memories with characters and enjoying crepes with hot chocolate in front of the castle. Find your top priorities and make sure everyone in your group has a say. That way, you’ll leave with a sense of accomplishment and fewer regrets.

Hard Lesson #2: The Weather (Really) Can Rain on Your Parade
Ah, the weather – another one of my hard-learned lessons at Disneyland Paris. Somehow, in all my excitement to get back to the parks, I managed to forget that the weather in France can be just as unpredictable as anywhere else. On one trip, it was freezing with brutal winds, and on another, it poured rain for hours.
So, here’s a friendly reminder: Disneyland Paris is magical, but it’s still on Earth. You’ll need to be prepared for the elements, no matter the time of year.
Before your trip, check the weather forecast a week ahead and again the day before you leave. Pack smart – layers are your best friend! Comfortable shoes are a must (trust me, I learned the hard way), and always bring essentials like sunscreen, hand gel, and snacks in your bag. I also never leave home without extra socks, just in case I end up drenched after a rain shower. Having a little bit of everything on hand can save the day – and save you from buying overpriced ponchos in the parks.

Hard Lesson #3: Budget Blunders: Watch Out for Hidden Costs
Disneyland Paris isn’t exactly a cheap day out, but wow, can those costs add up fast! From Mickey-shaped pretzels to that glass of champagne by the castle, you can quickly find yourself spending more than expected. After several visits, I was hit with the reality of rising snack prices and even steeper merchandise costs.
One of the hardest Disneyland Paris lessons I’ve learned is that unexpected expenses can really sneak up on you. So, how do you avoid the post-trip credit card shock?

💰4 PRO TIPS To Keep From Going Over Budget
- First, create a budget and stick to it. Know what you’re willing to spend on food, drinks, and souvenirs before you go. Use a budget planner to track your expenses
- Consider buying costumes and other fun items for the kids outside the parks, where prices are often more reasonable.
- Don’t forget to pack your own snacks and drinks – it’s a small thing that can make a big difference!

Hard Lesson #4: Fail to Plan = You Plan to Fail
I’ll admit it: I’ve been guilty of thinking I could just wander into Plaza Gardens without a reservation or grab that cute Minnie Cake Pop later in the day. Or worse, I’ve turned up to a Frozen show with the kids, only to find it fully booked for the rest of the day. Let’s just say, it didn’t end well.
Planning is key for a stress-free trip to Disneyland Paris. Make your dining reservations as soon as you can, grab those sweet treats from the Boardwalk Bakery in the morning, and arrive early for popular shows. You’ll thank yourself when you’re sitting down to a nice meal at Chez Rémy instead of scouring the park for somewhere with a free table!

Hard Lesson #5: Other People Can Be… Annoying (Sometimes)
Wouldn’t it be great if we had Disneyland Paris all to ourselves? Unfortunately, the days of ‘off-season’ trips with light crowds seem to be long gone. Now, it’s either Busy or Extremely Busy – all year round!
Crowds are just part of the Disneyland Paris experience, and yes, some visitors will drive you mad. Queue-jumping, smoking in restricted areas, and people shoving during parades and fireworks are all part of the territory. One of the most valuable Disneyland Paris lessons I’ve learned is to manage your expectations. Take a deep breath and remember that you’re not alone.
📌 5 Places Where You can Expect the Worst Crowds at Disneyland Paris (And How to Avoid Them!)
That said, there are a few crowd hotspots you can avoid with a little planning:
- After the fireworks: The crush of people trying to leave Main Street is real. Either hang back for 15 minutes or use the side arcades to exit.
- At the park opening: If you’re heading for Crush’s Coaster, expect chaos. If you really want to ride it, arrive 20 minutes before park opening to beat the worst of it.
- During parade time: People get very territorial about their parade spots. Stand your ground, watch out for your little ones, and try not to leave any gaps for people to sneak into!
- At the fast-food places during peak mealtimes. You do not want to be in the queue at Bella Notte for a Mickey pizza at 1pm. Try and have your lunch between 11 am and 12 pm or after 2 pm.
- Boarding the buses to your hotel at park closing time can be a nightmare. If possible, walk instead – it may be closer than you think. Otherwise, hang back until the crowds die down, or skip the fireworks if you’ve seen them already. And always keep an eye on your belongings.

Hard Lesson #6: Surprise Attraction Closures Can Ruin Your Day (But You Can Avoid Them!)
On one of my visits, several of my favourite attractions were closed for refurbishment. Peter Pan’s Flight, Hyperspace Mountain, and Indiana Jones were all down, and I have to admit, it was disappointing.
Disneyland Paris has to maintain their rides, and unfortunately, that means closures happen throughout the year. My advice? Always check their status before you go (my Disneyland Paris blog has this handy refurbishment schedule you can save to your phone).
That way, you won’t be surprised, and you can plan your day around the open attractions instead.

Hard Lesson 7: Not All Hotels are Created Equally
Staying at a Disneyland Paris hotel was a dream of mine for years, and the first time I stayed at the Disneyland Hotel (that gorgeous pink palace above the park entrance), it lived up to every expectation. The luxurious rooms, the chocolates on the pillows, and the posh breakfast with Mickey were amazing.
But the next time I stayed at Sequoia Lodge, my experience wasn’t quite as magical. The room was a bit dated, and the pool wasn’t as warm as I’d hoped.
The lesson here? Know what to expect from your Disneyland Paris hotel. Budget-friendly hotels like Cheyenne and Santa Fe are perfect for families, and I’ve enjoyed my stays there, but it’s all about managing expectations. I even gave Sequoia Lodge another try, and this time, knowing what to expect, I really enjoyed having a Glowtini by the fireside bar at Christmas.
